How Will You Hang?

family, freedom No Comments

“We must hang together, gentlemen…else, we shall most assuredly hang separately.”-Benjamin Franklin.

Imagine your city council enacts controversial legislation with no public notice despite city employees telling concerned citizens that before any action was taken, they’d read about it in the paper. Imagine that your city continues to refuse to hold a public hearing despite the uproar and you sue. The judge not only finds against you, but orders you to pay $10,000 in legal fees.

Your city tries to thwart your every effort to get your issue on the ballot, using a long and frivolous legal battle to strain your resources. The State Supreme Court grants you your day at the voting booth. You opt not to ask for attorney’s fees from your city, choosing not to burden taxpayers with the costs of the foolish policy of the people they elected.

Due to the national political situation and voter fatigue brought about by the city’s delaying tactics, you lose your vote at the polls. You accept defeat even though you don’t like it. You move on with your life.

In 2007, in a light turnout election the Mayor is re-elected by a whopping 19.2% of the registered voters in your city.

Now, it’s been fifty months since the ruling requiring you to pay, but the city has never made an attempt to collect, perhaps thinking better of a policy that was widely seen as mean-spirited, and reacting to your gracious move not to demand they pay your fees.

You then receive a letter dated four days prior informing you that there’s a lien on your house and that that you have less than three weeks to produce more than $10,000 or face a government attempt to seize your property to satisfy your debt. You then find out that your city placed a lien on your house four years previously and by the way, didn’t bother to tell you.

Such a nightmare scenario need not be imagined by two conservative activists in the City of Boise.

The City decided to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a Boise City park on the pretext of a threatened lawsuit by fringe hatemonger Fred Phelps. Though there were strong feelings on both sides, and the community wanted to have its say, the city instead tried to avoid controversy by reaching a closed door deal and then putting an item on the agenda that was vague to outsiders. Rather than mentioning a “Ten Commandments Monument” it instead cited it as a “Fraternal Order of Eagles Monument.”

Most people didn’t know what a Fraternal Order of Eagles Monument was and the motion was slipped through by underhanded politicians, who offered nearly 40 years of Boise history up as a sacrifice to a hateful out of state extremist. Mayors of nearby communities did the right thing and told Phelps in slightly more official terms to go jump in the lake.

Reverend Bryan Fischer, a Parks and Recreation Commissioner filed suit against the city, along with pro-life stalwart Brandi Swindell. The case was thrown out of court and the city asked for court costs from its citizens, and was granted more than $10,000, which they did not attempt to collect for four years.

Fischer, Swindell, and hundreds of grassroots activists stood against the capriciousness of Boise Mayor Dave Bieter for 70 days, until, at the end of the March, the city moved the Monument to a local church. Fischer and Swindell proposed a citizen’s initiative to place a new monument in the park. This monument, like the old one, would not be paid for by the city and would also feature Thomas Jefferson’s Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom. In the heat of July and August, volunteers worked desperately to collect enough signatures. Many wondered if ragtag volunteers could do it, but they did. The city responded by saying they wouldn’t allow a public vote on the legally qualified initiative.

This led to a two year court battle, and while Fischer and Swindell prevailed, justice delayed was truly justice denied. When the court’s ruling came down, it put a dormant Ten Commandments Issue back in the spotlight in the middle of a hotly contested general election where conservative money and attention was already divided, the conservative turnout was low, and Democratic Congressional Candidate Jim Hansen was running a turnout machine in Boise. Rather than continuing the momentum from the petition drive, the Keep the Commandments Coalition had to start from scratch, with many supporters having left Boise to escape its high taxes. The initiative lost 53-47%.

Life went on for Reverend Fischer and Ms. Swindell until , when they received the first notice they’d ever gotten in regards to the $10,000 in fees from 50 months before. The demand was as arrogant and out of touch as the original actions of the city, which were designed to avoid a lawsuit, but have already landed the city in the midst of at least two.

Who Are These People?

The left has its political activists, people whose only job seems to be to make trouble for taxpayers. Big environmental special interests, big labor, and the ACLU have their claws into every state in the Union. They fund people whose job it is to expand government and take away your freedoms.

They have fewer counterparts on the right for the simple reason that there are no counterweights to teachers’ unions that can coerce away the money of unwilling union members, abortionists who have a vested interest in wholesale slaughter, or big liberal foundations that seek to undermine the very system that allowed the prosperity that makes their existence possible.

Bryan Fischer and Brandi Swindell are some of those rare counterweights. They fight for conservative values every day.

Ms. Swindell has spent the prime of her life traveling the country trying to get the post-Roe generation involved in the pro-life issue. While many people her age are living out HBO and MTV shows, she’s chosen to be a voice for sexual purity and biblical values in a confused time.

She went to Florida to fight for the life of Terri Schaivo. She has stood for traditional values at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. She fought for conservatives to get a fair shake in the selection of speakers at Boise State University rather than being presented a slate full of nothing but liberal speakers.

In recent months, Swindell has appeared in the newspaper far less, because her work has been so positive. Her long time dream has been to do more than activism: to help women in crisis pregnancy situations, and that’s just what she’s done through her new organization, Stanton Health Care Services. She’s personally gotten involved in the lives of these young women.

Through her involvement in the lives of these women, she became a leader in the fight for Idaho’s landmark law against coercing women into getting abortions that was opposed by the state’s extreme liberals.

Bryan Fischer is a former pastor and Senate chaplain Idaho families couldn’t have a more tireless advocate. After a State Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage died in committee in 2004, and failed on the Senate floor in 2005, he led efforts to educate voters about how their Senators had voted leading to a complete reversal of fortune with practically the same Senate in 2006.

Fischer has been out front on nearly every conservative issue you could imagine over the past four years, from discussion of intelligent design and opposing economically harmful legislation on global warming, to decreasing the burden of grocery taxes on Idaho families, to standing for the English language and against illegal immigration, and against Idaho’s star chamber selection process for judicial vacancies. There hasn’t been an issue of concern to conservatives that he hasn’t touched.

Fischer’s daily updates provide a clear conservative view of what’s going on in the world and in our state, which counterbalances the bias of the Idaho Statesman. On top of this, Fischer produces the Gem State Voter Guide (http://www.gemstatevoterguide.com), which is the best example I’ve ever seen of a complete conservative voter guide.

The last time Idahoans for Tax Reform prepared their list of the top 50 conservatives in our State, Fischer ranked 24 and Swindell 30. Then-1st District Congressman, now Governor, Butch Otter ranked 36. They set a powerful example for Conservative Christians in our state.

Making An Example

Why is the Bieter Administration going after them? Governor Otter was elected by only nine points in 2006, and the presumptive Democratic frontrunner for Governor in 2010 is the Mayor of Idaho’s largest city, Dave Bieter.

What it is apparent, both in how it’s trying to collect the judgment and in the request for the judgment in the first place, is that the Bieter Administration has been trying to make examples of political opponents: Oppose Team Dave and they’ll roll over you.

I want you to think for a moment about what that means to grassroots activism. The threat of litigation or a threat to their home will scare some people off from the arena or from taking on powerful people. City Hall is trying to strong arm its opponents into silence.

The Conservative Response

The normal Conservative response would be to wish Ms. Swindell and Reverend Fischer well on getting $10,000 together on their modest income, and to hope someone else takes care of this. Many may wonder, if they don’t live in Idaho, why they should even care.

There’s one very simple reason to care: politicians watch one another. If one politician finds a slick new method of increasing his power, others will duplicate it. Corrupt political bossism is a cancer.

You rarely hear of liberals losing their homes or being forced into crippling debt because of their stances for liberal principles. You do hear of this quite often about conservatives, who find their ideological fellows absent when needed. The conservative movement is full of sunshine soldiers and summer patriots.

In Bryan Fischer and Brandi Swindell, we have two rare individuals who have born the heat of the battle. These people are no summer soldiers, these are no sunshine patriots, and they deserve our support.

At the beginning of America’s Revolution, when the usurpation of government on the rights of the people was most evident in Boston, it would have been easy for other colonies to simply say, “Well, that’s Boston.” However, the cry of the Revolutionary era was, “The cause of Boston is the cause of us all.”

I hope across America, people see the danger of what the Bieter Administration is doing, and that its misuse of legal processes against its own citizens will be denounced. “The cause of Boise is the cause of us all.”

To help:

1) Call the City of Boise and politely and respectfully express your concerns. If you live in Boise, it’s important to remind the city leaders that if the Mayor wants to bring the city together, he should stop trying to punish his political opponents. You can reach the Mayor’s hotline at 208-384-4404.

2) Insure that this matter does not create hardship for these two great conservatives through your support. Any donation will help. If 1,000 people send $10, this will be nearly enough to resolve the issue. You can send checks or money orders made out to the Keep the Commandments Coalition, PO Box 140031, Boise, Idaho 83714.

3) Forward this story on to anyone who might be interested. You may freely distribute the entirety of this particular column through any and all means without any written permission, as long as attribution is given.

4) Pray for Reverend and Mrs. Fischer, as well as Ms. Swindell as they go through this that God’s peace and wisdom will be with them and that they will be granted justice.

Something Nice About the McCains

McCain, family 3 Comments

Okay, regular readers of this blog know I’m not John McCain’s biggest fan, but I found out something I had not known about Senator McCain and his wife Cindy. They have an adopted daughter. Senator McCain did an interview about being a Father with Dad magazine and they asked about the adoption:

Dadmag: Your youngest daughter Bridget is adopted. Why did you decide to adopt Bridget?

McCain: Well it was primarily my wife’s Cindy’s idea. She was in Bangladesh and she and some of the medical personnel visited Mother Theresa’s orphanage to try and help the children there. There were two little baby girls there. One had a heart problem the other a severe cleft palate. Cindy was very concerned about their ability to survive and their need for medical treatment, so she decided to bring them here for medical treatment. She fell in love with both of them. We decided to adopt Bridget. Two close friends of ours, adopted Mickey, the other child.

Dadmag: You knew about your wife’s decision before hand?

McCain: (laughs) No. She arrived and said “Say hello to your new little daughter.”

Dadmag: A bit of a shock?

McCain: Yes indeed.

Dadmag: And how has it worked out? Are you happy with the decision to adopt Bridget?

McCain: Oh yes! She has enriched our lives. She’s a wonderful child, a complete part of our family and we love her.

Dadmag: Your other children accepted her well?

McCain: Oh yeah sure. She’s the toughest of the four. The youngest always has to be the toughest.

I guess it says quite a bit about Mrs. McCain’s character and heart. It also says something about Senator McCain that this hasn’t been trumpeted. In 9 years of reading about Senator McCain, the first time I heard about Bridget was this morning. With some politicians, there’d be books,  stories, maybe a made-for-TV movie about Cindy and John McCain’s inter-racial adoption. There are many ways this could be politically exploited, McCain has chosen not to. Good for him.

.  This does put a different spin on the Independent calls made in South Carolina against Senator McCain in 2000:

Dadmag: During your campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination Bridget became something of an issue in South Carolina didn’t she?

McCain: Yeah. There were some pretty vile and hurtful things said during the South Carolina primary. It’s a really nasty side of politics. We tried to ignore it and I think we shielded her from it. It’s just unfortunate that that sort of thing still exists As you know she’s Bengali, and very dark skinned. A lot of phone calls were made by people who said we should be very ashamed about her, about the color of her skin. Thousands and thousands of calls from people to voters saying “You know the McCains have a black baby” I believe that there is a special place in hell for people like those.

Indeed, unfortunately, this protection couldn’t last forever as Newsweek is set to report according to Politico:

Cindy McCain, in a lovely pink suit, is on the cover of the Newsweek issue that closes today. “Behind That Smile: Understanding Cindy McCain,” by Holly Bailey tells about the time the McCains’ adopted daughter, Bridget, Googles herself, learns about the South Carolina smears from 2000, and comes to Cindy to ask: “Why does President Bush hate me?”

While I don’t think Bush was involved or ordered the smears, people who wanted him elected did do this. And I guess this explains part of why McCain took so long to endorse Bush in 2000.

Of course, throughout this campaign, I’ll continue to analyze and criticize the Senator on his policy and strategy, but I think the way he and his wife have handled this adoption and the related issues has been classy, and readers should know that as well.

New York Lets Troubled Kids Choose Their Gender

family 2 Comments

I just don’t get it. What the heck is going on in this country? Are these people hittin’ the crack pipe?! These kids can’t even begin to reason like adults let alone make adult-like decisions. You would seriously think someone made this up. From our friends at CitizenLink.

New York’s Office of Children and Family Services, which runs the state’s juvenile-detention centers, has quietly adopted new rules that cater to lesbian, gay, bisexual and “transgender” youth in its custody, The Village Voice reported.

“Transgendered” youth can request private sleeping quarters and be called by their chosen name. The new guidelines even allow boys to wear girls’ panties and bras, use makeup and shave their legs.

The policy shift and new rules, which were approved without fanfare or even a press release, follow a 2006 lawsuit by a “transgendered” kid.

Caleb H. Price, policy analyst at Focus on the Family, said this is another example of how the pro-gay, pro-”transgender” agenda is spreading across America.

“These activists say there are not two genders, but theoretically an infinite number,” he said. “They argue that gender is fluid, and that you may select, create and express your own.

“These young people need professional attention and healing to help them embrace their God-given, biological sex. Instead, New York is helping these gender-confused juveniles to embrace disordered thinking and beliefs.”

And just as mind-blowing was this story reported in World News Daily recently.

Children’s hospital launches sex change for kids program
‘This isn’t conjecture, it’s happening now’

A doctor at the renowned Children’s Hospital Boston has launched a new program to drug children to delay puberty so they can decide whether they want a male or a female body, according to a report today in the Boston Globe.

Pediatric endocrinologist Norman Spack, 64, says he started the Gender Management Service Clinic because he found himself encountering 20-somethings who were “transgendered” and in good shape socially, “but they were having trouble getting their physique to conform to their identity.

“I knew the 20-somethings could have better chances of passing if they were treated earlier,” he said.

“We don’t think that demonic is too strong a word to describe this,” said a statement from the pro-family Mass Resistance organization. “It brings us thoughts of the Nazi doctors who thought they were doing good things.”

WND has reported previously on some of the controversies prompted by the belief that a man can be born in a woman’s body, or vice versa, including in Montgomery County, Md., where county officials have adopted a law that precludes those who provide public accommodations from discriminating based on that “gender identity.”

Voters there have petitioned to have a vote on that law because they fear men who “decide” they are female walking into women’s restrooms and locker rooms.

“Is this our future?” asked Mass Resistance in a commentary. “Dr. Norman Spack runs a clinic for young children who’ve ‘decided’ they are transgendered. Among other things, the clinic administers powerful hormones to delay (or even stop) puberty in order that the children more easily undergo operations that mutilate their bodies to ‘change’ them to the opposite sex.”

“This is going on at the world-renowned Children’s Hospital in Boston – not some backwater clinic. This is the elite of the medical profession,” the organization said.

In a question-and-answer session with Globe columnist Pagan Kennedy, she starts the apologetic for doing surgery on children by saying, “Little boys sob unless they’re allowed to wear dresses. The girls want to be called Luke, Ted, or James.”

“Until recently, children with cross-gender feelings rarely received modern medical care – and certainly not hormone shots. After all, who would allow a child to redesign his or her body?” she asks.

But Spack, she wrote, has started a clinic that “is one of the few in the world to give children treatments that change their bodies.”

She reports he uses drugs to delay puberty, “granting them a few more years before they develop bodies that are decidedly male or female.”

Spack tells the interviewer he’s seen “preadolescents” who have been dressing in underwear of the opposite sex “for years.”

“The puberty-blocking drugs work best at the beginning of the pubital process, typically age 10 to 12 for a girl and 12 to 14 for a boy,” he said. He’s based some of his work on a Dutch model for sex-change, and said the recommendations there are age 16 for hormones that forever change a child’s body.

But “for others,” he wrote, “you lose opportunities if you wait. [One of my patients, a] transgendered girl from the UK, was destined to be a 6-foot-4 male. With treatment, she’s going to end up 5-foot-10.”

He said such treatments not only change the physical characteristics of the growing children, but also could leave them sterile for life.

“You have to explain to the patients that if they go ahead, they may not be able to have children. … But if you don’t start treatment, they will always have trouble fitting in,” he said.

“This isn’t conjecture,” Mass Resistance’ commentary said. “It’s happening now. And ‘transgenderism’ is being promoted to kids by homosexual/transgender activists in the public schools.”

Children as young as 12 already have been given the treatment.

Meanwhile, LifeSiteNews has reported that Spack previously acknowledged that only about 20 percent of children who claim to have a confusion over their gender hold those feelings in adulthood.

The hospital itself calls the program “unique in the Western hemisphere.”

“This will be the first major program in the country that … [is] also welcoming young people who appear to be transgendered and are considering medical protocols that might help them,” Spack said.

N’Obama’s Promise to Planned Parenthood

2008 Race, Democrats, F3, Obama, family No Comments

The so-called Freedom of Choice Act could wipe away every state law limiting abortion.

In response to the April 18, 2007 U.S. Supreme Court decision (Gonzales v. Carhart) upholding the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, prominent Democratic members of Congress the next day reintroduced the so-called “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA), a proposed federal law to nullify virtually all federal and state limitations on abortion!

Last year, presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., shown here in his grass roots religious “garb” made a promise to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act,” he said.

The so-called Freedom of Choice Act could wipe away every state law limiting abortion, undoing decades of legal work, research and educational successes.

N’Obama has co-sponsored the legislation with 18 other senators. The bill has the support of 109 members of Congress.

“Thirty-five years after Roe, abortion supporters, like Senator N’Obama, are dismayed that abortion remains a divisive issue and that their radical agenda has not been submissively accepted by the American public,” writes Denise M. Burke, vice president of Americans United for Life.

“Rather than confronting legitimate issues concerning the availability and safety of abortion, they choose to blatantly ignore the concerns and interests of everyday Americans, as well as the growing evidence that abortion hurts women.”

Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union, said even the federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act could be overturned.

“This shows exactly how dangerous this man is to unborn children,” he said. “We are killing off our children, and this is something we really have to pay attention to.”

FACT: The majority of abortion’s are performed because of convenience. Having a baby is just too inconvenient. Well, telemarketers are pretty inconvenient, should we whack them too? How about door-to-door salesmen, should we bump them off? It seems like taking a life is okay to some people if it promises less stress or avoids a certain set back.

Planned Parenthood Uses Fake Name to Sneak into Cincinnati

News, family No Comments

From our friends at Family News in Focus and CitizenLink Daily Update we find some disturbing news coming out of Cincy.

Abortion giant calls itself a parking garage in stealth move.

No one noticed when “Auburn Avenue Parking” decided to move into Cincinnati. Turns out, the parking garage was just a front for Planned Parenthood.

Jim Sedlak, president of STOPP International, said the deception is telling.

“It’s really speaking to the fact that Planned Parenthood cannot operate freely under its own name because the public knows about them and knows they’re not to be trusted,” he said.

There may be another reason the abortion giant hid its identity, according to Paula Westwood, executive director of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati — it’s near Western Hills High School.

“Students are bused from all over the city, and it is predominantly African-American,” she said. “The strategic move is to be near the very large high school.

“Black American women are about 6 percent of the population but receiving about 35 percent of the abortions.”

Westwood and her team of life advocates are working to halt construction. She said she’s received a lot of support from residents who are outraged by the deception.

In Aurora, Ill., Planned Parenthood bought property under the name “Gemini Office Development.” In Denver, the abortion provider’s building permit was filed under “Fuller 38.”
